a Local

Best eats, hidden beach access, parking secrets, and everything the locals know — from someone who actually lives here.

From a neighbor, not a tourist

Indian Rocks Beach is a real town, not a resort

No chain hotels. No boardwalk. No neon signs. Indian Rocks Beach is a quiet, residential Gulf Coast community where the same families have been coming for generations — and where a growing number of people are deciding to stay permanently.

This guide is what I tell every buyer who asks me: "What's it actually like to live here?" The restaurants locals actually go to. The beach access points that don't show up on tourist maps. The parking tricks that save your Saturday morning. And the things that make this stretch of coast unlike anywhere else in Florida.

Parking secrets · 2026

How to always find parking

Parking in IRB is free — if you know where to look. Here's the local playbook.

Arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends

The free lots at 1st and 7th Ave fill by 10 AM on busy weekends. Early birds get the best spots — and the best beach.

Gulf Blvd street parking is free

There are metered and free stretches along Gulf Blvd itself. Look for the white-painted curb sections — no meters, no time limits in residential zones.

The 24th Ave lot is almost always open

Locals know that the north end of IRB (24th Ave area) almost always has free parking even when the south end is packed. It's a 5-minute walk to the best beach.

Weekday mornings are a different world

Tuesday through Thursday before noon, you can park anywhere. The beach is yours. This is how locals actually live here.

Splash Harbour has overflow parking

399 2nd St — when the beach lots are full, Splash Harbour's lot sometimes has overflow parking available. It's a short walk to the beach.

Golf cart tip

Golf carts are street-legal on Gulf Blvd in Indian Rocks Beach. Many locals own one specifically to avoid the parking situation entirely — hop on, drive to the beach or a restaurant, park anywhere. If you're considering buying here, factor this in. It changes the whole lifestyle equation.

Things to do · 2026

Beyond the beach

IRB has more going on than most people realize. Here are the activities locals actually do — not just the ones on the tourist brochure.

Kayak or Paddleboard the Intracoastal

The Intracoastal Waterway runs parallel to Gulf Blvd and is one of the most underrated paddling routes in Pinellas County. Rent from local outfitters near the Indian Rocks Beach boat ramp.

Early morning — glassy water, dolphins are active

Seaside Seabird Sanctuary

One of the largest wild bird hospitals in the US, right on Gulf Blvd in Indian Shores. Free admission, open daily until 5 PM. A genuine local treasure — not a tourist trap.

Morning feeding hours

Splash Harbour Water Park

Water slides, a lazy river, and a wave pool — right on the beach at 399 2nd St. Great for families and surprisingly fun for adults. Open seasonally.

Weekday mornings to avoid crowds

Pinellas Trail — Beach Section

The Pinellas Trail runs the length of the county and has a dedicated beach section near IRB. Rent bikes locally and ride north to Clearwater or south toward St. Pete Beach.

Early morning or late afternoon

IRB Nature Preserve Boardwalk

A hidden gem at 903 Gulf Blvd — a mangrove boardwalk and observation deck that most tourists walk right past. Manatees are occasionally spotted in the adjacent waterway.

Golden hour (1 hour before sunset)

Sunrise Beach Walk

IRB faces west for sunsets, but the sunrise over the Intracoastal from the east side of Gulf Blvd is spectacular. Walk the beach north from 1st Ave at dawn — you'll often have it to yourself.
